Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices such as smartphones, tablets, vehicles and other items which are interconnected to collect and exchange data through the sensors, software, actuators, micro-chips, electronics etc., embedded in them to ensure network connectivity (viz. Internet, Bluetooth, etc).

According to Forbes.com , IoT is the concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other). This includes everything from cellphones, coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost anything else you can think of.

Examples of IoT: Heart monitoring implants, Biochip transponders on farm animals, Cameras streaming live feeds of wild animals in coastal waters, Automobiles with built-in sensors, Self-driving cars, Smart home appliances, field operation devices that assist firefighters in search and rescue operations, and many more.

These devices collect useful data with the help of various existing technologies and then autonomously flow the data between other devices.

The IoT allows objects to be sensed or controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit in addition to reduced human intervention.
