At the Qualcomm 5G Summit 2020 event, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Reliance Jio along with its wholly-owned subsidiary Radisys Corporation have revealed their successful joint efforts on 5G in the public domain with a view to providing indigenous 5G network infrastructure and services in India.
Jio 5G RAN
Qualcomm & Jio achieved over a 1 Gbps (1,000Mbps) milestone on the Reliance Jio 5GNR software by harnessing the potential of the Qualcomm® 5G RAN (Radio Access Network) Platforms. This achievement not only supports Jio’s 5G credentials but also signifies the entry of Jio and India into the Gigabit 5G NR product portfolio.
Purpose: To provide indigenous 5G network infrastructure and services in India.
At present, just a few nations such as the United States (USA), South Korea, Australia, Switzerland and Germany are able to showcase 1 Gbps speeds to 5G customers.
Speaking at the Qualcomm 5G Summit 2020, Mr. Mathew Oommen, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm, said:
We are excited about working with Qualcomm Technologies in developing new generation cloud-native 5G RAN technology that is truly open and software-defined. The development of secure RAN solutions with Qualcomm Technologies combined with Jio Platforms and scale provides the ideal combination for local manufacturing and for accelerating the realization of Atmanirbhar Bharat for an inclusive 5G nation.
Benefits of 5G technology
From 5G-enabled smartphones to enterprise laptops to AR/VR products to vertical IoT (Internet of Things) solutions, you will experience the benefits of
- higher data rates,
- low latency communications,
- and enhanced digital experiences across a wide array of connected devices.
What is Radio Access Network (RAN)?
The term Radio Access Network (RAN) is part of a mobile telecommunication system that connects individual devices to the network through radio connections. Conceptually, it resides between a device such as a mobile phone, a computer, or any remotely controlled machine and provides a connection with its Core Network (CN).
Depending on the standard, mobile phones and other wireless connected devices are varyingly known as User Equipment (UE), terminal equipment, Mobile Station (MS), etc. RAN functionality is typically provided by a silicon chip residing in both the core network as well as the user equipment. It provides access and coordinates the management of resources across the radio sites.
A handset 📱 or other device is wirelessly connected to a backbone or core network, and the RAN sends its signal to various wireless endpoints, so it can travel with other networks’ traffic. A single handset/phone could be connected at the same time to multiple RANs, which is sometimes called dual-mode handsets.
Qualcomm 5G Summit 2020
At the 5G summit, Qualcomm Technologies launched a full portfolio of 5G infrastructure semiconductor platforms to accelerate the operators’ transition toward virtualized and interoperable Radio Access Networks (RAN), a pattern driven by 5G.
The portfolio ranges from macro base stations with massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) to micro base stations with compact designs.
The portfolio of 5G RAN is designed to allow established and emerging network vendors to accelerate deployment and commercialization of vRAN equipment and features that address the demands of 5G for both public and private networks.
Rajen Vagadia, Vice President of Qualcomm India Private Limited and President of Qualcomm India, said:
We’re delighted to enter a new phase in our longtime relationship with Reliance Jio, building on our shared vision for 5G and supporting the digital transformation of India. As the need for reliable, robust and powerful mobile experiences increases across India, we anticipate a new wave of demand for 5G services from both end users and enterprises, such as manufacturing, health care and retail. Jio is regarded as a game changer in delivering cost effective and widespread 4G network coverage to its subscribers and we look forward to working closely with them on the journey to rollout advanced 5G infrastructure and services for Indian customers.
5G RAN platforms
Qualcomm also launched three new 5G RAN platforms – Qualcomm® Radio Unit Platform, Qualcomm® Distributed Unit Platform, and Qualcomm® Distributed Radio Unit Platform – to help mobile operators in deployment of a new generation of converged, open and virtualized RAN (vRAN) networks.
The new platforms offer a fully scalable and highly flexible architecture that supports all 5G functional split options between Distributed Unit (DU) and Radio Unit (RU) for macro and micro deployments – complementing the Company’s current 5G RAN platform offerings for small cells.
Qualcomm 5G RAN Platforms
The Qualcomm 5G RAN Platforms are designed to power a new generation of flexible, virtualized, and interoperable cellular networks worldwide.
Features | Description |
---|---|
High-performance Modern-RF systems | Designed for superior radio performance including high-power, high capacity operation |
Macro to small cells | The solutions offer scalable support for a wide range of infrastructure categories ranging from macro base stations with massive MIMO to small cells. |
