Aadhaar Controversy: RBI Clarification & Virtual ID

These days, Aadhaar controversy has not only become a sensitive topic for Indian citizens but also for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) & the Government of India (GoI). From Virtual ID to its data breach controversy, every issue effects us in our day-to-day life.

Aadhaar Controversy & IBRDT paper

There are rumors of Aadhaar Data Breach in the public domain, which has created controversy & confusion among people. The Tribune reporter has exposed the report on Aadhaar data leak in just 500.

In this row, the white paper titled Biometric and Its Impact in India published by the Institute for Development & Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), which is an affiliated institute of the Reserve Bank of India. on Aadhaar threat has come in public domain that is creating chaos among common man.

According to Dr. S Ananth, who is adjunct faculty of the IDRBT & author of white paper, pointed serious privacy issues regarding to Aadhaar.

Excerpt of his study: For the first time in the history of India, there is now a readily available single target (Aadhaar) for cyber criminals as well as India’s external enemies. So, be cautious!

RBI clarification over IBRDT paper

Over Aadhaar controversy, RBI has clarified that neither the central bank nor its researcher IBRDT was in any way connected to a study on security aspects of Aadhaar. The views expressed by Dr. S Ananth are not those of the RBI.

In a separate statement, IDRBT stated that the views expressed in the study are those of the author alone and do not represent the views of IDRBT or RBI.

Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID)

In this hotch-potch atmosphere, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new fresh layer of security – Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID), Limited KYC and UID Tokens – for Aadhaar card holders.

The Virtual ID will be a 16-digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number. You will be able to generate a temporary 16-digit number that can be shared instead of the Aadhaar number for various services like airline or railway counters. It will be issued from 1st March 2018. It’s really an innovative way for safety & security for Aadhaar database.

Summary

Our honorable Government is very serious regarding the security of Aadhaar database. It is working & implementing each and every technique for the privacy of Aadhaar card holders. Though, it should be freely welcome the negative comments on Aadhaar so that it can create protective shield for our Aadhaar.
