Popularity & Demand

Dark Mode has been in very high demand since last year. In the beginning, it was called ‘Lights Out’ Mode. WhatsApp Dark Mode brings a fresh look for both Android & iOS. WhatsApp makes sure users don’t feel any difference while using Dark Mode, it’s the same experience as using normal mode.

WhatsApp is used by more than 1 billion people worldwide. So, before making such a huge design change WhatsApp did some research & experiment. They especially paid focus on two particular areas:

  1. Readability: In this point, WhatsApp’s main focus is to reduce eye fatigue. For this, they are prioritizing colors that are closer to system defaults.
  2. Information Hierarchy: In any design, all the important information must be visible properly. WhatsApp takes care of this point by choosing colors & other design elements that project important details.

Dark Mode reduces Eye Fatigue

Smartphones have changed people’s lifestyles rapidly. Many smartphone users have been facing eye strain symptoms because they are spending more time on their smartphones. During the day time, screen light doesn’t affect eyes more but during the night, usually when lights are off, bright screen light affects eyes which is not good for the health. Dark Mode is very effective in such cases.

YouTube has also adapted this change and gave an option for the dark theme. Many smartphone users also like to use Dark Mode even in daylight. I’m one of them ;).
